How to Make a Tall & Skinny Pinwheel Tote Bag

Once upon a time I was a newbie quilter who made her first ever set of pinwheels out of adorable black and red fabric. The pinwheels were adorable in theory, but the mismatched points were glaringly unsightly. Enter the humble button, which saved my first attempts from being seam ripped or ignored and gave them new life.   There, that’s much better! I made these pinwheels as a test, then set them aside.  I eventually came across them again and decided to repurpose them into a small tote bag to use while travelling on the train.  I wanted to be able to put my lunch at the base of the bag…

    Diamond Echo Lap Quilt

This quilt features brown and pink fabrics made with half square triangles.  I designed the pattern myself while doodling on my tablet – I call it the Diamond Echo. This quilt was a stash buster.  Years ago I picked up this pretty brown and pink floral while travelling south of the border with a friend.  While in Buffalo, we snagged a bunch of quilting cottons.  I loved the print so much that I didn’t want to cut into it.  I decided to keep the bulk of the fabric for the backing of a quilt and use whatever was left within the design.  I combined the brown floral with a cute pink on white polka dot…

Purple Floral Diamond Eight Point Star Quilt

This blog post is a sneak preview of an upcoming tutorial.  I’m working on a printable pattern for this medium difficulty half-square triangle quilt to share here on Craftcore.  I wanted to create the Diamond Eight Point Star block without having to cut and piece diamond units, and you can do it too!  The pattern is not yet ready to share, but I can’t resist sharing the end results of this project because it just makes me so happy to look at it. This purple quilt uses dainty floral prints against a crisp white background.  This quilt is a gift for my sister-in-law and my not-yet-born niece who is due to be born in…

Jumbo Half Square Triangle Baby Boy Quilt

This quilt was a baby shower present for my nephew Samuel. I chose pale green and denim shades of blue for the baby boy.  Half of the fabrics feature a car motif with traffic signals, stop signs, automobiles, and directional arrows.  My favourite fabric from this quilt is the dark blue star fabric which I used as the backing and the binding. I created the quilt using jumbo half square triangle blocks cut out from 10″ squares.  I added a 3″ border around the edge of the entire quilt.  For the stitching. I quilted 1/4″ from all seams in navy to blend into the star backing but stand out and pop on the bulk…

Quilting Basics: HST and QST Printable Cutting Guide

Two building blocks of quilt patterns are the HST unit and the QST unit: the half square triangle and the quarter square triangle.  Once you have this skill in your arsenal, the world of quilting opens wide! The method I will show you in this tutorial will create two units at once rather than one at a time.  The process goes a lot faster with minimal extra steps, plus there’s less risk of the triangles getting stretched out due to bias cutting. This post contains affiliate links, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a little commission at no extra cost to you if you make…
