I remember as a tween getting many kinds of craft kits for different holidays and birthdays.
Sand art kits, friendship bracelets, gimp bracelets and key chains. Then there were perler beads. They really stood out as a staple craft project in those years: cute, multicoloured plastic beads that can be arranged on peg boards and then ironed to keep whatever shape or image you decided to go with.

Recently I went rummaging through a bunch of old childhood stuff while visiting my grandmother. Well lo and behold, I found a jar of my old perler beads! I took them home and they have been sitting on my shelf ever since.

After seeing many different projects involving unconventional ways of using perler beads, I decided to try this project.

What you’ll need:

  • Oven safe bowl or large mug
  • Cooking spray (you can substitute butter as well)
  • Perler beads
  1. Take your oven-safe bowl or mug and spray a light coat of cooking spray. (If you don’t have the spray you can always substitute for a light layer of butter).
Don’t worry, this won’t affect the outcome or coat of the finished bowl.
  2. Cover the inside of the bowl with the perler beads. You can choose to colour coordinate or arrange any kind of design you want. I chose to arrange my beads to make a random design. Although if your beads are not already colour coordinated this might take a while…
You can also put them in randomly and will still have a neat outcome.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C)
  4. While waiting for the oven to preheat, make sure each individual bead is flat on the bowl. You won’t want any overlapping beads!
  5. Put the bowl in the oven on a cookie sheet and leave it for 10 minutes (if you find that your oven is a little hotter than others, you might only want to leave the bowl in for 6 minutes or so).
  6. Check to see that the beads have melted slightly but not completely. Remove from the oven and let cool for approximately 20 minutes.
  7. After cooled, remove from the bowl and admire your work!

Et voilà!

You have yourself a perler bead bowl. These cute little bowls are useful for holding trinkets of any kind.
I like to use mine for my house keys in the front entrance!
