Granola bars are usually known as a healthy snack, although if you don’t pay careful attention you may be consuming just as many calories and fat as any regular candy bar. So in this recipe I’ve swapped one of the biggest culprits, oil for a more healthier option, applesauce!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of rolled oats
  • 1 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup (or one individual) applesauce
  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup dried fruit (this can be cranberries, orange/lemon, or dates)
  1. Line a large baking sheet with tin foil and lightly grease or use a non-stick spray and preheat your oven to 300 degrees (Fahrenheit).
  2. In a large bowl mix all the wet ingredients together.
  3. Add the oats and almonds to the wet ingredients and mix until everything is evenly coated. (I didn’t add the almonds yet to my mix as my boyfriend is allergic. Instead I removed half of the mix and added them to it separately).
  4. Pour the mix onto your baking sheet and spread to an even layer. (As you can see on the picture. Mine has almonds on only half the sheet).
  5. Bake for 15 minutes while preparing the dried fruit. Here I’ve decided to go with dates and orange/lemon zest.
  6. Remove tray from the oven and spread dried fruit mix to the granola. Insert back into the oven and bake for another 20 – 30 minutes. Remember the longer you leave it in for, the more crunchy the granola.

  7. Let the granola cool down for 15 – 20 mins. Once cool, cut into bars using a knife and enjoy! You can eat as is or even top with your favorite yogurt.

Bon Appétit!
